On the 19th of May 1997 A.L.H.A. SpA, under a licensing contract drawn up with the Airport Authority “SEA”, sub-contracted the Cargo Handling activities of Malpensa airport. ALL air freight can be handled in accordance with IATA international rules:

  • General Cargo
  • Special Cargo
  • Civil mail and military mail
  • Express Cargo
  • Transit Cargo

Alha Airport is the main cargo handler in Milan, the biggest in Italy. The company operates in Milan MXP International Airport since 1997 and at the moment handles 70% of the whole freight in the Airport (In 2007 more than 330.000 tonns of freight have been handled), with 300 persons of staff.

Alha Airport S.p.a. operates in MXP Cargo City, with a total of 20.000 sqm of indoor facilities and 25.000 sqm of external areas.
The warehouse is provided with modern and efficient structures and equipment, which allow the handling of every kind of cargo; among these: 15 refrigerated rooms, caveau, protected and monitored areas for valuable shipments, morgue, special areas for dangerous goods, some of which alarmed by infra-red barriers for dangerous – valuable shipments (perfumes). ULDs are built up in 12 workstations and a fully automated stacker system can store up to 350 pallets.

Particular attention is to be paid to “PIF”, frontier inspection site where, under European Union Authorization, live animals and  animal origin products incoming from extra-Europe countries are inspected and allowed to enter the EU. This structure includes 9 refrigerated rooms 2 visit rooms , dedicated way of access, staff and equipment.

Alha Airport handles freight for many of the most important Carriers such as Korean Air Cargo, Emirates SkyCargo, Cargolux, American Airlines, Malaysian, China Cargo Airlines, Lufthansa “time:matters”, TAM, Air Baltic, CzekaAirlines, U.S. Airways, Malev.

Besides Cargo Handling activities, since February 2007 Alha Airport also operates Mail Handling for the whole mail in MXP. Mail handling is performed and monitored by microchip and barcode technology, which allows a 100% traceability of the shipments and cuts the impact of human errors drastically.

All members of staff, at different levels, have undergone IATA training courses (DGR, RRR, Live animals), held by IATA certified schools. Moreover, in order to comply with national and international rules in terms of safety and HR trainings, Alha Airport has its own internal certified trainers and specific training programs for the proper use of all automated machinery.

In order to guarantee the best security conditions in the working areas under its control, Alha Airport has decided to create his own security service. The Local Security operates 24h/day in the field of terrorism prevention, freight monitoring and security controls.

By the end of the year a new refrigerated inspection site for Phytopathologist inspections will be fully operating. Like PIF for animal products, the new visit areas will be where vegetal-origin products will be inspected before entering the EU.

In 2008 Alha Airport has implemented MACS, Mail and Cargo System, a new specific IT System for mail and cargo handling which will be able to communicate with almost all the systems of any company operating in the field of cargo (Carriers, agents, forwarders, etc.).
Thanks to its technology and online services, MACS leads to:

  • time saving and considerable improvement of efficiency in cargo document handling and flight preparation;
  • Reduction of acceptance time;
  • Availability of a wide range of information for the customer;
